I smell a SLIC-RAT!!

This past few weeks I have been introduced to the acronym SLIC and how it describes elements of an instructional event. I have investigated what is meant by using ICT to replace, amplify/enhance, and transform; and, know that you should always be aiming for amplify and transform. We have learned about the RAT model and how to apply it to assess a particular application of ICT and Pedagogy. The aim should be  to avoid using ICT and Pedagogy to replace existing student learning, instructional methods or curriculum goals. I enjoyed a past students blog, Sara, who summed up these Frameworks perfectly.

Replacement-ICT is used to replace some prior means, but does not change any aspect of SLIC.
Amplify- ICT is used to amplify (increase) the efficiency or productivity without really changing any aspect of SLIC.
Transform- ICT is used to transform some aspect of SLIC.

SLIC – An acronym that combines Student Learning, Instructional method, and Curriculum goals.3 themes of an instructional event:

  1. StudentLearning process; – i.e. what the learner does.
  2. Instructional method; and, – i.e. what the teacher does.
  3. Curriculum goals. – i.e. what you want the learner to learn.
